A statue of St Michael at the top of the abbey church towers 157.10 metres above the shoreline. The abbey and its outbuildings are classified as historic monuments by the 1862 list (60 other buildings were subsequently protected); the islet and the coastal strip of the bay have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, as has the Moidrey mill since 2007. In addition, the mountain has received a second worldwide recognition as a stopover on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela in France for “pilgrims from Northern Europe (who) passed through the mountain on their way to Galicia.
